How to Strengthen Your Intuition (Even If You Think You're Not Intuitive)

"I'm not nearly as intuitive as you are, but I've had some things happen to me, too."
I can't tell you how many times I've heard that sentence before an intuitive reading.
Then my client immediately tells me about a dream that came true, or a loved one who visited them after they passed away. Or sometimes a gut feeling they couldn't explain, but just knew they were right.
It could even be a situation where they just knew something before it happened. It actually makes me smile, because they're proving their own point wrong.
The truth is, I don't believe intuition is something reserved just for “some” people.
I think every person is born intuitive.
The difference between you and me isn't that I have intuition and you don't. I’ve just spent years strengthening my intuitive muscles.
We're all born with a body, and we're all born intuitive.
If you want a stronger body, you have to work on it.
Just like if you want stronger intuition, you have to constantly flex that too. Trust me when I say, your intuition is probably a lot stronger than you even realize.
My First Experiences With Intuition
Looking back, I can see that I was incredibly intuitive as a child. The funny thing is, I never realized it back then. I just thought everyone was like me.
Back then, my intuition was all about fear. I was a pretty scared kid.
I grew up in a home on Lake Tapps, Washington, that always felt different to me. From the moment we moved in when I was in first grade, I constantly felt like someone was watching me. I literally felt something breathing down my neck as I walked downstairs to my room.
My bedroom was in the basement, and I was scared to death! I hated that house!
I was so scared that sometimes I didn't even want to wash my hair in the shower because I didn’t like the sound of the water covering my ears. I thought something bad was going to happen if I couldn't hear what was around me.
At the time, I thought I was just afraid.
Years later, I realized I was actually sensing energy around me, and now I know my mediumship abilities were extremely loud!
I was receiving information and didn’t understand what I was experiencing.
So, as a very little girl, I started praying every night to my angels, asking them to protect me while I slept.
One night was really significant.
I had a dream about a blonde boy around ten years old. He would explain who was around me and why they were there.
To this day, I call him my little angel baby, and I can always tell it’s him coming through because my skin gets warm. Like I’m standing in front of a heater.
Back then, I still felt scared when he visited me, but he would remind me that I was safe.
Looking back now, I realize something important.
The moment I prayed to my angels and asked for help, their guidance would always show up for me.
When I Stopped Being Afraid of My Intuition
Things really intensified for me in ninth grade.
My parents had separated, and I was living in a large house with my dad.
One day, I heard the front door slam upstairs and assumed he had come home.
But nobody was there.
Not long after that, a six-disc CD changer suddenly started blasting music throughout the house. To this day, I remember it was a Norah Jones song.
I was terrified to say the least!
At one point, I actually called the police because I thought someone had broken into the house.
They searched everywhere throughout the house and outside, but found nothing. I began to think
I was crazy.
Then one of my brother's friends claimed he saw a spirit outside the basement window coming towards him. That really scared me!
A few days later, a friend spent the night and woke up in the middle of the night to use our bathroom. The next morning, she was gone.
She had gone home because she said she saw a ghost standing in the bathroom doorway.
That was the point, I was over it! That’s when I finally yelled out loud:
"I don't want to see you! Stay away from me!"
That night, I had a dream that changed everything.
My great-grandmother Ruth appeared and glided toward me. Behind her were countless people holding hands and leaning on one another’s shoulders. The feeling of love and peace was unlike anything I had ever experienced before.
It felt like pure unconditional love. Like they were all there for me.
Grandma Ruth told me telepathically that she had been watching over me for years and was only there to look after me. She said she was worried about me and kept me safe.
And the next day, when I woke up, something had changed.
All of my fear was gone. I’m talking years of being scared had completely dissolved.
I realized finally what the big picture was… and even though I couldn’t “see them” I could feel them, and I had a deep knowing that everything was always going to be okay.
The Biggest Misconception About Intuition
Most people think intuition is something special that only certain people have.
I don't believe that for one second.
In fact, I hear the same thing almost every week when I connect with my clients:
"I think I have intuition, but I don't know how to trust what I’m receiving."
In my experience, everyone has intuition; they just don’t know how to manage what’s coming through or how it’s coming in uniquely to them.
They are absolutely already picking up on intuitive information every single day.
But they don’t yet know how to condense or concentrate it, and then strengthen what they’re receiving.
Why You Talk Yourself Out of Your Intuition
The biggest thing I see is people talking themselves out of their very first intuitive hit. Or what some might call instinct.
Think back to taking a test you took in school.
How many times did you pick an answer, change it, and then realize your first answer was the correct one?
Your intuition works exactly like that.
You get a feeling. Then you have a knowing or a nudge, but then your mind shows up, and it starts overanalyzing the heck out of what you just received.
It begins creating twenty-plus different possibilities. And before you know it, everything feels grey, fuzzy, and now you’re lost.
It’s in those lightning-fast moments that you can no longer tell the difference between your intuition and your overthinking monkey mind.
That's why I always tell people to go with their first instinct. It might not be perfect every time, but it’s how you start rebuilding trust in yourself.
What Intuition Feels Like For Me
People often ask me what intuition actually feels like.
So for me, it starts as a feeling or emotion first. Then I begin seeing information in my mind. Sometimes it’s like a little movie is playing behind my eyes.
One of my biggest confirmations is goosebumps. Not little goosebumps. A full-on head-to-toe wave of goosebumps. I experience them constantly during readings.
What's even more fun is when my clients experience them too. Sometimes they'll stop me in the middle of a reading and say: "Whoa. What the heck is happening?!"
They've never experienced sensations like that before.
Those moments are always so awesome, because their body is confirming something before their human mind can explain it.
Now, that doesn't mean everyone gets goosebumps, but it’s fun when it happens.
Getting goosebumps is just one of the ways my intuition communicates with me.
Part of strengthening your intuition is learning what its language is and how it communicates with you. … and here are a few ways you can do that.
3 Simple Ways to Strengthen Your Intuition Today
Slow Down
You will struggle to hear subtle guidance if you're moving a million miles an hour.
We are wired to go, go, go. Most people are so busy thinking about what's next that they never stop long enough to notice what's happening right now.
Your intuition is always communicating with you, but you just have to create enough space to hear it.
Trust Your First Instinct (this one is the hardest for people)
Your intuition usually arrives before your mind starts its monkey nonsense. Pay close attention to your first feeling or emotion. This is your very first knowing, and it’s most likely the most accurate.
The more often you honor this knowing, the stronger your trust becomes. It’s like you begin to build a better relationship by paying attention to how your body is responding to your truth.
Learn Your Own Intuitive Language
My intuition often comes through as feelings, emotions, images, and, of course, goosebumps.
Yours may be completely different. You may hear words. You may have dreams. You may simply know things, or see images.
The more you pay attention to how intuition shows up for you, the easier it becomes to recognize it when it happens.
Your Intuition Is Already There
If you take one thing away from this article, let it be this: You already have an internal guide.
I believe every single person has a higher self helping them navigate life every day.
The guidance is there, but the number one problem most people have is that we're usually too busy to notice it.
We're moving a million miles an hour. We're distracted. We're overstimulated. We're thinking and doing before we slow down, and just feel.
So here's what I encourage you to do now.
Take a moment.
Close your eyes.
Relax your body.
Take a slow breath.
Ask one simple question to your intuitive guides.
Then listen for the very first thing that comes through.
Now trust it, even if you don’t like the answer!
The more you practice this, the more you'll begin to recognize that your intuition has been talking to you all along. You just haven't been slowing down long enough to actually feel it.
It's almost like having Google built into your soul. The answers may not always arrive the way you expect them to, but I believe they're already there.
Be sure to share this with someone who is opening up their intuition.
